Lawyers know that courtroom graphics can make the complex simple—and persuasive! Ed Hawkins, a professor of climate science at the University of Reading in the UK, has done just that with this extraordinary GIF, which catalogues the rising global temperatures since 1850. The finale of this warming graphic is startling as the temperature rise, so closely packed 100 years ago, begins to change dramatically for the worse right now—in 2015-2016. Yipes.


But wait. Our imminent demise from global warming was not my point. The point is that charts, diagrams, pictures and illustrations can communicate more powerfully than words on a page, requiring less of the reader and reaching right passed the mind to the heart. That’s the core of our communication philosophy: if you can, show; don’t tell.
